The Carroll Community School District (CCSD) Board of Education reviewed tentative plans for their in-town busing program for the 2021-22 school year during their meeting last (Tuesday) night. Last year, buses could not run at full capacity due to COVID-19 restrictions, which required the district to make significant changes to how they transported students before and after school. However, Transportation Director, Jeff Cullen, says this should not be an issue come August.
Cullen adds they were fortunate to retain all of their drivers from last year, which should ensure they have enough staff to service urban and rural routes. While coronavirus restrictions for buses have been mostly lifted, he says the district won’t be returning to its pre-pandemic busing practices. Cullen is proposing they instead utilize pick-up and drop-off points.
According to Cullen, the district’s drivers traveled approximately 250,000 miles on the 23 morning and 23 afternoon routes plus special education and noontime transportation, and that was during a year with fewer kids riding buses than normal. Utilizing neighborhood stops will help streamline the system with minimal impact on students and families. Board member, Onica Ulveling, asked how Kuemper families who previously used in-town busing would be impacted. Cullen says they have been consulting with Kuemper’s administration, and they do not anticipate any substantial difference.
Cullen notes this plan is subject to change, especially as registration numbers start coming in at the beginning of July. He is hoping to have a map of the proposed stops on the district’s website soon, and that map will then be updated as required.
