Leaders Speak Out About Their Disappointment With Reversal Of Rule Allowing Year-Round Sale Of E15

A Friday ruling by a federal appeals court that overturned an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule allowing year-round sale of ethanol gasoline with a 15 percent blend was a blow to Iowa corn producers as well as the state’s economy. It has also drawn rebuke from state leaders and representatives. U.S. Senator, Joni Ernst, tweeted out her feelings on the court’s decision, saying this is yet another disappointment to Iowa’s hardworking farmers and biofuels producers. “I fought hard to give consumers access to E15 12 months of the year—including the summer driving season—and will continue working to ensure this cleaner, more affordable choice is available at the pump.” Iowa Secretary of Agriculture, Mike Naig, also weighed in, voicing his disappointment in what he calls yet another setback for the renewable fuels industry. “The decision by the D.C. Circuit Court of Appeals has created uncertainty and will cause economic harm to both fuel retailers and farmers. Consumers must have access to these more affordable, cleaner-burning fuels, especially during the summer driving season.” Naig also vows to continue to fight for this critical piece of the state’s economy. The court overturned a 2019 change made by the Trump Administration that allowed for the year-round sale of E15. Three of the judges on the appeals court say federal law was never intended to allow anything other than a maximum of a 10 percent ethanol blend to be sold all year.
