Kuemper played well but fell down 2-0 in the 1st inning and weren’t able to tie the game though they hung tight all game. The Knights were able to score 3-runs just 3 hits with only one walk and no errors for the Cardinals. Earlham finished with 10 hits and scored 6 times.
The Cardinal came out swinging the bats well and scored a pair of runs in the 1st on four hits with a double by Emma Jensen and a triple by Cora Boyle as highlights. Kuemper went hitless the first two innings but Melinda Schaefer drove a ball through the infield to right field to lead off the 3rd and it gave Kuemper some energy. Kaci Peter bunted her to 2nd base and she moved to 3rd on a single by Kyndal Hilgenberg. Hilgenberg then broke for 2nd and Schaefer stole home and the Knights were down 2-1 heading bottom 3rd.
Alli Boyle and Katie Janssen had back to back hits for Earlham in the 3rd but Kuemper appeared ready to get out of trouble. Earlham was able to take advantage of a Kuemper miscue on defense to score a run, extending the lead to 3-1. The Knights finished with 3 errors, allowing 4 unearned runs. Earlham scored two more runs in the 4th with another Kuemper error extending the inning. Alexis Voss picked up an RBI single. The lead grew to 6-1 in the 5th when Morgan Mineart reached on an error and scored on a double by Emma Jensen.
Kuemper fought back in the 6th. Kyndal Hilgenberg walked to start the inning and scored on an RBI double by Jordan Schwabe. Allison Ostrander came in to run for Schwabe and scored on a groundout by Kenzie Schon. The Knights were down 6-3 heading to the 7th but weren’t able to extend the rally.
Kuemper defense had some really good moments in the game. Kenadee Loew made a great catch on a hard line drive to 3rd base by Emma Jensen and Brianna Lux made an outstanding diving catch in shallow right field to end the 2nd inning. Jordan Schwabe was brilliant behind the plate all night long.
Jordan Schwabe had the only extra base hit for Kuemper, Melinda Schaefer and Kyndal Hilgenberg both singled. Schaefer, Hilgenberg and Allison Ostrander scored for the Knights. Schwabe and Kenzie Schon had RBI. Kamryn Venner pitched 5 innings, allowing 6 hits and no earned runs. Chloe Ventiecher got the start and allowed 4 hits and 2 earned runs.
The Knights wrap up the season 23-14 and were 4th in the Hawkeye 10 Conference.
