Sac County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Petey To Retire, Fundraising Underway For Replacement And Second Unit

Sac County Sheriff, Ken McClure, says they have made the difficult decision to retire their K-9, Petey, who has been battling hip issues. Petey will remain with his handler for the past six years, Sgt. Johnathan Meyer and his family. McClure says Petey has had an impressive career with the Sheriff’s Office, tracking and apprehending four fugitives, seizing nearly 3,000 grams of marijuana and almost 200 grams of methamphetamine. He has also been responsible for the seizure of over $2,000 and made many, many trips to schools in Sac County for presentations. The Sac County Sheriff’s Office has utilized K-9s since the late 1980s and found it to be a critical part of their operation. McClure says they will begin fundraising to replace Petey and to add a second K-9 unit, but he says this is a costly venture. For a dual-purpose dog that can conduct drug tracking, building and evidence searches, criminal apprehension and handler protection, the cost is about $15,000. Additional equipment is also needed, such as a kennel insert for a patrol vehicle, home kennel and assorted leads and leashes. McClure adds they want to thank all of the donors who have supported the K-9 program over the years, also aiding with veterinarian and food expenses.
