The Remsen St. Mary’s Hawks used their efficient hitting and defensive strength to power past Grundy Center in the first round of the Class 1A State Baseball tournament Monday morning. 

The Grundy Center Spartan’s first two offensive innings were rough, leaving one runner stranded on first base in the first inning and going three up and three down in the second inning. Remsen St. Mary’s got their offense out to a strong start in the first and second innings. Levi Waldschmitt, Blaine Harpenau, and Xavier Galles got the Hawks on the board in the first, giving them a 3-0 lead, and then Cater Schorg scored off Harpenau’s sacrifice hit in the second, giving the Hawks the 4-0 lead. 

While Grundy Center went three up and three down offensively in the third inning, defensively they shutdown the Hawks in their at bats, stranding two runners on base and stopping the Hawks’ scoring for the time being. Remsen St. Mary’s 4th inning was dominant, shutting down Grundy Center in their at bats while leaving one runner stranded on second, and getting 10 runs in the bottom half of the inning. That offensive push was highlighted by Cael Ortmann, who got four RBI off two doubles and a run scored. Damen Brownmiller and Schorg also grabbed RBIs along with a run scored. With the 14-0 lead, Remsen St. Mary’s closed out the game in the top of the fifth with a 2-3 putout to defeat Grundy Center and advance to the next round of the state tournament. Remsen St. Mary’s Head Coach Dean Harpenau tells Carroll Broadcasting his team’s focus was on their overall playing, not just a single aspect like hitting, and to do well on the little things like getting a successful bunt.

Grundy Center’s season comes to an end with a final record of 19-9. Remsen St. Mary’s will take on the winner of Kee, Lansing and New London. That semifinal round of the state baseball tournament will be played Wednesday at 11:00 am at Merchant’s Park.
