Class 2A State Baseball Tournament – Quarterfinals
Camanche 18
Denver 1
It was all Camanche all game long as the Indians cruised past the Denver Cyclones to advance to Wednesday’s Semifinal game.
Denver started off on offense and we’re able to get the first run of the game on the board when Bryce Phelps scored, giving the Cyclones the early 1-0 lead. In the bottom half of the first inning, Camanche took over in a big way.
Before the first out was recorded, Camanche got out to a 12-1 lead. This offensive drive was led by Mike DelZell who got a 3 RBI triple and an RBI single along with 2 runs scored in the first inning alone. Kaiden Jenkins also got three runners home off a 3 RBI double. A grounder to the second basemen, a strikeout looking, and a line drive to the second baseman finally ended the long half inning.
Denver’s Mason Thurm got on first base but was forced out at second part of a double play at second and first that ended the top half of the second inning. Camanche continued their wave of offensive success with a five run bottom of the second. Kaiden Jenkins got another two runners home off a 2 RBI double to get up to 5 RBI on the day, and Mike DelZell got a runner home off an RBI single, his fifth of the day as well. Camanche took a 17-1 lead into the third inning.
Denver stranded a runner at second base in the top of the third and Camanche was only able to score Kyle Deweerdt to increase their lead to 18-1. Denver had a late game rally going which included getting the bases loaded, but a flyout to right field solidified it for Camanche as they won in four innings 18-1.
Denver’s season comes to an end with a final record of 18-19. Camanche will face the winner of Centerville and New Hampton in Wednesday’s Semifinal game.
