Centerville Scores 9 Runs Over Last 4 Innings to Top Camanche

Class 2A Semifinals

Camanche Vs Centerville

Centerville 12

Camanche 11         (8 Innings)

Camanche built a 10-3 lead heading into the bottom 5th inning but couldn’t hold on as Centerville scored 8 runs, including the tying run in the bottom 7th, then scored a run bottom 8th when Merrick Mathews drove in Kade Mosley to advance to Thursday final vs Van Meter, who edged Unity Christian in the first semifinal. Centerville won the game despite having 6 errors. They countered it, by out hitting Camanche 21-11.

Camanche scored at least a run in each of the first five innings. They were helped by Centerville defense that struggled early, giving up 3 unearned runs in the 1st inning, an unearned run in the 2nd inning and 2 more unearned runs in the 4th inning. Centerville had an error in five of the eight innings but only had 1 error over the final 3 innings, as their bats came alive. The Big Red scored 3-runs in the 5th and 6th innings and added 2 in the bottom 7th to tie the game. Camanche picked up an insurance run in the top 7th on a base hit, hit-by-pitch and an error.

The momentum seemed to turn bottom 5th. Camanche scored 3 runs in the top half,  but Centerville answered with 3 runs and had 4 hits, bringing  their dugout and crowd to life. They chased Zach Erwin in the 6th and took advantage, scoring 3 runs and nearly took the lead, leaving the bases loaded. An error on a cut off throw in the 7th allowed the tying run to score on a Brady Kauzlarich triple.

Brady Kauzlarich, Merrick Matthews and Korey Shondol led the Big Red offense combining for 12 hits, 8 RBI and scoring 8-runs. Kauzlarich was intentionally walked in the 8th to put runners on 1st and 2nd. That set up Mathews to be the hero and his base hit to left field drove in the game ending run from Kade Mosley. Miles Claswson and Kellen Johnston had big base hits, driving in runs in the 5th. Clawson walked in the 6th to bring home another run. Korey Shondel drove in a pair of runs for the Big Red in the 6th with a single.

Logan Shaw picked up 3 hits for Camanche, Kyle Deweerdt added a pair of hits and 2 RBI an Mike Delzell scored a pair of runs.

Centerville advances to Thursday final vs Van Meter at 21-14. Camanche ends the season 24-7.
