Three local teens have been selected to participate in the 2021 Governor’s Charity Steer Show at the Iowa State Fair this weekend. Lane Elmquist of Audubon and his steer, Nelson, will be partnering with Jeff Angelo from WHO 1040 out of Des Moines to raise money for the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Iowa. Lane says he is looking forward to showing off Nelson in front of a large audience.
The list of celebrities for Saturday’s show features many well-known Iowans: Governor, Kim Reynolds; Iowa Sec. of Agriculture, Mike Naig; Iowa Hawkeye Wrestler, Jaydin Eierman; and others. There is a bit of a contest this year between the participants for the title of “Community Hero.” Lane’s mother, Brittany, explains.
Another local student, Cody Von Glan from Ar-We-Va, will be showing his steer, Red Rebel, with Lt. Gov. Adam Gregg. This will be the fourth time in six years that somebody from the Von Glan family will be participating in the show, and Cody says it is an honor to be selected to help such a great organization.
Von Glan adds he is hoping to keep the family winning streak alive at this year’s show. The final local participants are Calleigh Fitzpatrick of Churdan and her steer, Campbell. They will be teaming up with Iowa State Assistant Wrestling Coach, Brent Metcalf. The charity auction is scheduled to begin immediately following the show, and the Elmquists have put together a fundraiser that will be added to the final bid for Nelson. Donations to Team Nelson can be dropped off at Audubon State Bank or through Venmo using the username @Brittany-Elmquist-1. The Saturday, Aug. 14 show begins at 4:30 p.m. and will be broadcast on Iowa PBS as well as livestreamed. You can support the teens’ Community Hero pages by following the links included below.
