Region XII Council of Government’s Local Assistance Director, Chris Whitaker, took a deeper dive into the census estimates released last week and has put together a synopsis of what is being reported for the immediate listening area. While Carroll County saw a modest overall decline in population of 56 individuals from 2010 to 2020, there were five of 13 communities that saw their numbers go up. Arcadia reported the highest percentage increase in residents by 8.47 percent while Breda came in up 3.52 percent, Ralston with 2.53 percent growth, Carroll with 2.16 percent and Glidden at .44 percent. And in looking at the seven counties in the region, all but one have estimated drops in population over the past decade. Calhoun County reports growth at 2.67 percent, having gained 257 residents. Audubon county is estimated to be down by 7.27 percent while Crawford dropped 3.34 percent, Greene by 6.05 percent, Guthrie by 3.02 percent and Sac County by 5.18 percent. Overall, the state of Iowa saw much of its growth in the urban areas and was able to report a population increase of 4.73 percent.
