As of the end of July, only four of Iowa’s 99 counties had officially declared themselves as Second Amendment sanctuaries. Madison and Cedar passed their resolutions in late July while Jasper and Hardin approved theirs earlier in that same month. On Monday, the Carroll County Board of Supervisors will open a discussion on approving their own resolution for the same. Becoming a Second Amendment sanctuary county means that local law enforcement will not enforce state or federal laws the board has deemed an infringement on the gun rights of residents. This review and consideration are the first items on the agenda for the next supervisor meeting on Monday, Aug. 23 at 9 a.m. This is followed by routine updates from the Secondary Roads Department and a public hearing on a Fiscal Year (FY) 2022 budget amendment. The board is also scheduled to enter into two closed sessions, one at 9:40 a.m. and the other at 10:20 a.m., with both falling under Iowa Code 21.5(1), “To evaluate the professional competency of an individual whose appointment, hiring, performance or discharge is being considered when necessary to prevent needless and irreparable injury to that individual’s reputation and that individual requests a closed session.” Other business includes review of a resolution for a suspension of property taxes and manure management updates. The board will convene at 9 a.m. Monday in the lower-level meeting room at the Carroll County Courthouse. The public is invited to attend, but the session will also be livestreamed via the supervisor’s YouTube channel, a link to which is included below.
