Thomas Herbers of Carroll

Thomas Melvin Herbers, age 62, of Carroll, IA, passed away on Monday, August 16, 2021 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll after a lengthy battle with ALS.

     A private family funeral service will be held at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll with Pastor Dean Blood officiating. Casket bearers will be Brian Wilson, Allan Bundt, Scott Irlbeck, Steve Stypa, Mike Wiederin and Mike Jensen. A public graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 28, 2021 at 12:00 P.M. at the Carroll City Cemetery in Carroll.  Military honors will be conducted by the Carroll American Legion and the Iowa National Guard.

     Public visitation will be held on Friday, August 27, 2021 from 5:00 – 7:00 P.M. at the Dahn and Woodhouse Funeral Home in Carroll.

     Thomas was born on October 18, 1958 at St. Anthony Regional Hospital in Carroll, the son of Melvin and Dolores (Berger) Herbers. He attended Kemper Catholic Schools graduating with the High School Class of 1977. On August 23, 1977, he enlisted in the United States Air Force. During his tour of duty he was stationed in Spokane, WA and was honorably discharged in August 22, 1981. He then enlisted into the Iowa National Guard where he served two years. Tom moved to Clarinda, IA where he was employed at S&K Bearing Company in the maintenance department for one year before moving to Carroll on March 8, 1982.

     On October 6, 1984, he was united in marriage to DeLayne Austin at St. Augustine’s Catholic Church in Halbur, IA. They were blessed with three children. He was one of the first employees to be hired at Pella Corporation in Carroll and continued to work there until he retired after 36 years of employment.

     Thomas was a member of the Faith Bible Church in Sac City, IA and an honorary member of the Riverside Baptist Church in Juneau, AK. He was also a member of the Carroll American Legion. In his younger years he enjoyed playing slow pitch softball with his friends and family. In his spare time you would often find him tending to his large vegetable garden, playing a game of cards or restoring several 2 cylinder John Deere Tractors which he had a love for. He always cherished his summer trips to Alaska with DeLayne which they took every year for the last 20 years. He was a man always willing to lend a hand to help someone in need but most of all he loved to spend time with his family especially his grandchildren.

     Thomas is survived by his wife DeLayne Herbers of Carroll; his children Jeremy and wife Becky Herbers of Altamonte Springs, FL, Eric Herbers and significant other Casey Whitver of Carroll, Elizabeth and husband Garrett Moreland of Breda, IA; his grandchildren Duncan Moreland, Dakota Holifield, Taylor Martin, Caitlyn Herbers, Dominic Herbers, Aiden Moreland, Camden Moreland and Madilyn Moreland; his mother Dolores Herbers of Elkhorn, NE, his brothers and sisters Kathy and husband Dennis Vogl of Atlantic, IA, Leo  and wife Deanne Herbers of Urbandale, IA, Jean and husband Barry Ford of Omaha, NE, Carol and husband George Packard of Ogallala, NE, Louis and wife Kris Herbers of Manning, IA, Lori and husband Tom Dunn of Hot Springs, SD, Annette and husband Michael Fields of Clive, IA and Daniel and wife Michelle Herbers of Gretna, NE; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law John Niemeyer of Bloomington, MN, Darlo and wife Janet Austin of Sac City, IA, Doyle Austin of Rockwell City, IA, Bobbi Austin of Sioux City, IA Pam and Mike Johnson of Sioux City, IA; nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

     Thomas was preceded in death by his father Melvin Herbers, his sister Marian Niemeyer, his mother-in-law and father-in-law Lewis and Bernette Austin, his brother-in-law Daryl Austin, and his sister-in-law Jill Austin.
