A national non-profit organization is coming through with a bullet and stab protective vest for another area K-9 unit. The Guthrie County Sheriff’s Office says Vested Interest in K-9s, Inc. of Massachusetts will be providing their K-9 Urs with an embroidered vest bearing the sentiment, “Honoring those who served and sacrificed.” Delivery will take approximately eight to 10 weeks. The non-profit organization was established in 2009 with an identified mission of providing the protective equipment and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. Since that time, they have donated more than 4,381 vests, valued at more than $6.9 million, to K-9s in all 50 states. The program is open to U.S. dogs who are at least 20 months old and actively employed and certified with law enforcement or related agencies. K-9s with expired vests are also eligible to participate. Each vest is valued at between $1,744 and $2,283 and weighs an average of between four and five pounds. The potentially life-saving body armor is custom fitted and NIJ certified.
