Carroll Man Accused Of Lying On Background Check During Gun Purchase Reaches Agreement With Prosecutors

A Carroll man arrested last month for illegal possession of a firearm has reached a plea agreement with prosecutors. According to Carroll County District Court records, 23-year-old Tomas Vincent Pratt submitted his written guilty plea Monday to one count of receipt, dominion or control of a firearm by a felon, a class D felony. Pratt was taken into custody by the Carroll County Sheriff’s Office after an investigation found he had attempted to purchase a .223-caliber rifle from a local gun store and provided false information on an application for an Iowa permit to carry weapons. Authorities executed a search warrant on Aug. 26 at his residence and located marijuana and a .40-caliber handgun, magazines and ammunition. Pratt is prohibited from owning or handling firearms due to a 2015 conviction for aggravated battery in Cook County, Ill. According to the filed plea agreement, charges of providing false information on a permit to acquire a firearm and possession of a controlled substance will be dismissed after sentencing. As of Tuesday, a sentencing hearing has not yet been scheduled.
