This Saturday, the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) invites all residents to join them at 20 different state parks and forests across the state for volunteer events. Activities include picking up litter, harvesting prairie seeds, painting shelter houses and buildings, cleaning trails and much more. They are requesting that those planning to attend RSVP in advance. This can be done for the specific events, which can be found on a link to the DNR’s volunteer webpage included below. The two nearest volunteer opportunities are at Prairie Rose State Park near Harlan and Springbrook State Park north of Guthrie Center. Prairie Rose is seeking 10 to 20 volunteers to join them at 4:30 p.m. at the lower shower building parking lot, located next to site 39. They will join park staff for a thorough cleaning of the campground. At Springbrook, they are asking for up to 20 volunteers to meet at 9 a.m. this Saturday at the campground gazebo. They will be asked to assist with repairing, staining and sealing picnic tables and to work in the pollinator pods. They are asking attendees to bring gloves, a rake or garden trowel if available and a water bottle. Details on how to RSVP for both events can also be found here.
