The Sac County Sheriff’s Office announces they have run into an issue with one of their new K-9 units during training. When long-time Sac County K-9, Petey, retired after six years of service, they were able to replace him with two new dogs from Code 2 K-9 in Omaha, Neb., Havoc and Roco. The dogs were delivered to their handlers on the last day of August, Sgt. Jonathan Meyer received Havoc and Deputy Francisco Cruz was assigned Roco. Since that time, Sheriff, Ken McClure, reports Havoc and Sgt. Meyer have received narcotic detection and tracking certification. However, an issue with Roco’s teeth was identified by a veterinarian and it was determined it would create problems with the training. Roco is to be returned to Code 2 K-9 and a replacement will be delivered soon. With the goal of having K-9 support units active and available on a daily basis, the Sheriff’s Office has utilized generous donations from community members to fund the purchase, equipment and ongoing expenses. Recently, the Sac County Attorney, Ben Smith, made an allocation of $5,000 from the county’s forfeiture fund for use by the K-9 program.
