Iowa is reaching the peak fall color viewing season according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR). Trees in the counties between U.S. Highway 20 and Interstate 80 are usually the most vivid during the first through third weeks of October, but warmer-than-usual temperatures have slowed the process this year. Forestry staff estimates west central Iowa viewing will be at its best in mid to late October. Central Iowa’s forecast resembles that estimate with peak times starting Saturday, Oct. 9 and continuing through Sunday, Oct. 17. Colors will be at their brightest in the northern third of Iowa through the beginning of next week while the southern third of the state should peak starting around Oct. 20 through the end of the month. The DNR recommends Iowans take advantage of the more than 50 state parks to enjoy the fall colors. Links with more details about the best scenic overlooks in Iowa can be found included below.
