East Sac At Alta-Aurelia- Class 2A Region 1

East Sac 3

Alta-Aurelia 2

25-20, 25-16, 25-27, 21-25, 18-16

East Sac found a way on Wednesday as they had to dig deep to advance to the Regional Semifinals on Monday. The Raiders controlled most of set one and dominated set two only to watch Alta-Aurelia rally late to win set three and take set four to tie the match. East Sac was up most of set five before the Warriors took a late lead and had match point twice before East Sac pulled out the win. The match had 38 ties and 17 lead changes.

The Raiders trailed briefly in set one at 4-3 but went back up 6-5 and then got kills from Kate Vondrak and Meredith Brown to slowly pull away. Meredith Brown had a big block in the middle to put East Sac up 15-9. The lead grew to 19-10 on back-to-back kills from Addison Ehler. The Raiders were up 23-13 when Alta-Aurelia started attacking the Raiders serve receive and cut the deficit to 24-20 before East Sac scored the final point to lead 1-0.

Addison Ehler had two early kills in set two as East Sac went up 3-1 but the Warriors scored the next 3 points and took their only lead in set two as 4-3. Kate Vondrak took over at the net and Jen Aschinger went on a long service run and East Sac extended the lead from 4-4 to 11-4. During that stretch Vondrak had 5 kills and Mary Bontrager added a kill. The Warriors never closer than 4 the rest of the set and Vondrak put the set away with another kill.

The Raiders couldn’t pull away in set three and Alta-Aurelia gained confidence as East Sac started trying to tip and dump the ball. The Warriors used those opportunities to get Shae Lockin and Jenna Nielsen going at the net and picked up the win. The third set was tied 11 times with the last tie at 25-25. The Raiders had led by 4 at 13-9 midway through and the set had 6 lead changes. The Warriors rallied after being down 13-9 and went up 15-14, extending it to 21-18. The Raiders rallied this time and Paige Wunschel got a kill to put them ahead 23-22. They couldn’t hold the lead and they never led again though they tied it at 24 and 25 before falling 27-25.

The loss in set three impacted East Sac while rejuvenating Alta-Aurelia. The Warriors got out to an early 8-3 lead. This time it was East Sac that fought back and Paige Wunschel block gave them an 11-10 lead. Alta-Aurelia answered and lead by as many as three before East Sac stormed back and went ahead 16-15. Again, the Warriors answered and got the lead back at 19-18. East Sac had chances tying the set at 19, 20, 32 but couldn’t get back on top and Allison Watts sent the match to a fifth set with back-to-back kills.

The energy that was missing in sets three and four was back and McKenna Meyer was a big part of that for the Raiders as the sophomore made her first appearance of the night and scored a couple early kills on aggressive swings. That opened things for Kate Vondrak who had a kill to put the Raiders up 4-3. East Sac extended their lead and were the first team to double figures, leading 10-5. Alta-Aurelia battled back and tied the set at 13. The Warriors went ahead 14-13 and had match point, but service troubles for them earlier in the match came back and East Sac was able to stave off two match points before going ahead 16-15. The Raiders couldn’t put it away and the Warriors tied it at 16. A hitting error gave the Raiders another chance and this time Alta-Aurelia couldn’t clear the ball in three hits and the Raiders advanced with a 3-2 win.

East Sac improved to 21-7 on the season and will travel to Ridge View on Monday in the Regional Semifinal. The Raptors knocked off Lawton Bronson to advance in three sets.

Kate Vondrak finished with a team high 19 kills, Meredith Brown added 12 kills and 11 digs. Mary Bontrager had a team high 15 assists and two crucial aces late in the match.
