This weekend marks the beginning of the fall open burning period for Denison residents. From Saturday, Nov. 6 to Sunday, Nov. 14, open burning of leaves, sticks, weeds and other yard waste is permitted between sunrise and sunset. Burn sites must be cleared of all flammable materials prior to starting, and there should be at least a 10-foot area around the flame. Residents should keep water and hand tools, such as a shovel or rake, nearby while supervising the burn to respond quickly if the fire spreads unintentionally. All fires must be kept clear of public streets, curbs and sidewalks. Burning garbage or treated wood is strictly prohibited. City officials remind residents the yard waste disposal site on South Main Street is a viable disposal alternative for materials. Regulations on open burning vary from community to community, so check with local officials prior to starting to avoid potential penalties.
