Mission Honduras Coordinator for Kuemper Catholic Schools, Mike McCArty, says the last time a group from the region was able to take the biennial trip was in 2019. But they are pleased to announce they have booked plans for next March.
There are currently 33 students and adults signed up, with a possible 34th. This includes juniors and seniors, 14 of them, as well as three to four repeats from 2017 and the rest are adults, up to 60+ years of age. McCarty says they are lucky to have a couple of professionals joining them as well.
McCArty says it is not just Kuemper students given an opportunity to go.
Some of the other planned projects include the construction of a couple of houses. These are not the same as what we think of here in the United States.
The mattresses purchased for the missioners are left behind for use in bunk beds they build for the houses. They will also be going to another school in the area to do some odd jobs and leave supplies that are brought in with each person. McCarty says they try to bring in close to 100 pounds of different supplies per missioner. He says this is a very moving act of mercy these students are participating in, and he adds they tend to thrive in that environment of giving, giving and more giving. The last time they were “in country,” they got to see their work here at home being put to good use.
There is one main fundraiser that supports these trips, and McCarty says everyone is invited to purchase a raffle ticket to help cover their costs.
For those interested in purchasing a ticket but do not know a missioner, they can contact McCarty at mpmcarty@kuemper.org. He will make sure the students receive credit for the sale.
