A shortage of drivers and student safety concerns are forcing officials with the South Central Calhoun (SCC) Community School District to change how they manage transportation. According to Superintendent, Brad Anderson, the issues arose with the beginning of religious education classes in several of the district’s communities. In the past, SCC has worked with these organizations to help students reach their destinations, but Anderson says they simply cannot continue this practice due to a variety of factors.
In addition to limited resources, Anderson notes continuing this practice would result in overcrowding on several of their buses and violate Iowa Code, which restricts the overall riding time for students. Anderson stresses that only the recently implemented in-town stops will be affected by the change. He says the transportation challenges facing the district are not unique to SCC, and they are exploring several options to alleviate some of the pressure on the system.
Anderson reiterates the district will continue to shuttle students between the Rockwell City and Lake City facilities, but transportation for religious education purposes will end. School officials apologize for the inconvenience and welcome ideas on how this could be reinstated in the future. Questions or concerns should be directed to the SCC District Office at 712-297-7341.
