A Farnhamville man initially arrested for attempted burglary will face reduced charges in Carroll County District Court. According to trial information filed last week, 35-year-old Joseph Dewitt Midkiff faces one count of third-degree criminal mischief, an aggravated misdemeanor, for an incident reported on June 22 at the Carroll Walmart. Authorities say Midkiff broke into the store’s jewelry case but was unable to take any of the items inside before fleeing when the alarm sounded.. Damage to the jewelry case was estimated to be between $750 and $1,500. He was taken into custody by the Carroll Police Department on an outstanding warrant for second-degree burglary, a class D felony, but prosecutors opted to move forward with the lesser charge. Midkiff’s next court appearance is scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 18 for an arraignment hearing. An aggravated misdemeanor carries a maximum penalty of up to two years in prison and $6,250 in fines.
