Carroll finished 16th with 36 points

The Carroll Girls Swim team wrapped up an outstanding season with six events competing in the finals on Saturday. The Tigers would collect 36 points and finished 16th as a team. Waukee, the favorite heading into the weekend dominated the action on Saturday and took 1st place by nearly a 100 points over 2nd place Ames. Iowa City West took 3rd place, one point ahead of Dowling with Ankeny rounding out the top 5 in team standings.

The Tigers were in the opening event of the day with Sophia Polking, Emma Myers, Amelia Holt and Ashley Beagle competing in the 200 Medley Relay. They qualified with a 1:53.49 and were able to top that mark on Saturday. The race started off oddly with a 4-5 minute delay to fix equipment right before heat two, which the Tigers were in. Sophia Polking, who started the race for Carroll told Carroll Broadcasting after the race that she had to put her warmups back on and tried to refocus once they were told they could race. She swam a good opening leg. Emma Myers put the Tigers in first place in their head with an outstanding swim. Carroll finished 2nd in their heat and 16th overall in a time of 1:53.31.

Jenna Currier was the next Tiger in action swimming in back to back events with a 20 minute break between the 50 Free and the 100 Fly. Currier was battling an ankle sprain and says she tweaked it which impacted her coming off the starting blocks. Currier said she swam better on Friday then on Saturday though she had a good State Swim meet. She finished 5th in her heat and 13th overall in the 50 Free with a 24:89. Her qualifying time was a 24.12. After the break Currier competed in her 2nd event of the day the 100 Fly. She was sharp, taking 2nd in her heat in a time of 59.04, Currier was 10th overall.

Carroll entered the 200 Free Relay in 12th place and bettered that with a solid race. The Tigers swam a 1:40.53 and moved into 11 place with Emma Myers, Hailey Burns, Ellie Beagle and Jenna Currier. Carroll took 3rd in th3 3rd heat out of lane six. Emma Myers started the Tigers with strong led and Hailey Burns and Ellie Beagle both kept Carroll in good shape going into the closing leg by Jenna Currier.

Emma Myers qualified for State last season but was unable to attend the meet and didn’t get a chance to swim. The sophomore says she was very upset last season that she wasn’t able to compete. She made up for it in 2021 by qualifying in four events and swimming in three of those in the finals. Myers wrapped up her day in the 100 Breaststroke. She was in the 2nd heat but had to swim out of lane 1. She finished the race in 1:06.62 and brought home and 8th place finish.

Carroll ended the meet in the final event of the day, with all three of their relay teams advancing. Ellie Beagle, Amelia Holt, Hailey Burns and Jenna Currier raced in the 400 Free Relay. Beagle had a good start though the Tigers felt the starting block was not real solid. Amelia Holt swam the 2nd leg, followed by Burns and then Currier. Carroll finished 8th in their heat and would finish 19th overall in 3:44.89.

The girls felt after the meet that the pool swum a little slow on Saturday and several felt that they swam better on Friday. Carroll wraps up a terrific season though with seven kids competing in seven events over the two days.
