The driver of a Carroll Community School District (CCSD) bus has been cited following an accident on Friday afternoon. The Carroll Police Department responded to the scene at Grant Road and 12th Street at approximately 3:39 p.m. The initial investigation revealed 57-year-old Lon Denis Leiting of Carroll was southbound on Grant Road in a 2009 Honda Element. At the same time, a 2015 Freightliner bus, driven by 73-year-old Paul Richard Dern of Glidden, was westbound on 12th. Dern stopped for the posted sign at the intersection, but told authorities he did not see the Leiting vehicle and pulled out into the intersection, striking the Element on the driver’s side door and deploying the side curtain airbags. The Leiting vehicle was spun around by the impact and came to rest on the lawn across the street. Both Leiting and Dern complained of possible minor injuries and Leiting was transported to St. Anthony Regional Hospital by private vehicle for treatment. There was no report of student injuries and all students were either picked up by their parents or transferred to another bus. There was an estimated $10,000 in damage to the Honda and $500 in damage to the school bus. Dern was cited for failure to obey a stop or yield sign.
