The Career Advantage Coordinator at the Carroll Campus of Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) was recently recognized by the Iowa School Counselor Association (ISCA). Jen Wollesen of Lake View was nominated by Audubon Middle and High School Counselor, Courtney Walter, and was named the Iowa School Counselor Association Advocate of the Year at a recent conference. Walter wrote in her nomination about what an asset Wollesen has been to her counseling program at Audubon High School. “In a rural area, we have the same access to support and resources for our students as other areas of the state and Jen is a big part of making that happen, Walter wrote. “Her ideas and creativity have made my job as a school counselor easier and more fun. But most importantly, she helps create positive outcomes for our students.” The award goes to an individual or group whose advocacy of school counseling services has had a positive effect on school counseling on a local, state or national level. Provost at the Carroll DMACC campus, Joel Lundstrom, says Wollesen works closely with area high school counselors as students prepare for life beyond high school. “She is respected by everyone she works with. Jen is clearly deserving of this prestigious accolade […]. Jen’s work with the Local College Access Network (LCAN) is helping area students to get into college, complete FAFSAs and many other goals focused on improving college attainment,” Lundstrom says. “Her work with these students goes beyond DMACC and concurrent enrollment opportunities.”
