Carroll at Gilbert

Carroll 54

Gilbert 51

In a blockbuster game filled with lengthy scoring runs and a close final score, the Carroll Tigers were able to squeeze their way past the Gilbert Tigers on Friday night.

A lot of things went Gilbert’s way in the first quarter as they found themselves up 13-4 midway through the quarter. But Carroll managed to go on a 5-1 run in the final two minutes to cut down that lead to 14-9 at the end of the first quarter. The second quarter was close for both teams as Gilbert managed to outperform Carroll by one point at 9-8. Carroll’s Nick Macke led the team in the half with six points as the Carroll Tigers got down 23-17 at halftime.

The start to the second half wasn’t kind to Carroll as they got down by 11 points midway through the third quarter. But, just like the first quarter, they mounted a strong 7-0 run that cut down the Gilbert lead again to 36-32 going into the fourth quarter. Macke still led the team at that point with 13 points and Carroll was still looking to take their first lead of the game. That lead came early in the fourth quarter as Carroll took off for a 12-0 run with Tanner Gotto giving Carroll their first lead of the entire game. The rally continued all throughout the fourth quarter until Kaleb Booth came alive and led the comeback with 25 total points in the game. The Tigers managed to escape with a 54-51 victory over Gilbert after five lead changes in the fourth quarter alone. Macke ended his day with 15 points for Carroll.

The Carroll Tigers improve to 2-0 on the season overall and 1-0 in the Raccoon River Conference. Coming up on Tuesday, December 7th, Carroll will play host to North Polk.

Both teams came out fast offensively combining to score 46 points in the 1st quarter. The game remained tight through at half but South Central Calhoun clamped down in the 2nd half on defense and their offense clicked. The Titans outscored the Raiders 20-7 in the 3rd, finishing with four players in double figures and two more with 9 and 8 points respectively. Their balance overmatched the Raiders defense; the Titans defense held Tyler Schmitt to 6 points in the 2nd half after he scored 22 in the 1st half. The win moved South Central Calhoun to 2-0 while East Sac fell to 0-2.

Tyler Schmitt was the best player on the floor in the 1st half and the Titans struggled to contain him. He stepped away from the rim, using his quickness and athletic ability to get to the rim and score against multiple defenders. The Titans countered with several three-point shots including a long three from Gavin Batta to open the game. Their good ball movement allowed them to get good looks. The Titans led 25-21 after the 1st quarter as they never trailed in the game. East Sac tied the game at 6 but the Titans lead hung around 3-8 points most of the quarter. The lead grew to as much as 9 midway through the 2nd quarter but the Raiders rallied to make it a four point game at half.

The Titans finished the game hitting eleven three pointers compared to three for East Sac. A good number of those came in the 3rd quarter when the Titans took control of the game. Gavin Batta had 3 points at half but finished with 17, most coming in the 3rd. He hit several long-range shots helping South Central Calhoun quickly extend the lead to double digits. The Titans didn’t go on a large run but put together several 5-2 and 4-0 runs to put the game out of reach.

Gavin Batta led the Titans with 17 points while Joshua Dietrich added 16 points. Tyler Lightner finished with 13 points and Eli Wheelock had 12 points for South Central Calhoun. Tyler Schmitt led all scorers with 28 points to go with 15 rebounds for the Raiders. Cale Niehaus hit a pair of 3’s, finishing with 8 points and Luke Wright added 7 points.

The first quarter was close for both teams as Paton Churdan was matching up well with the Crusaders. Coon Rapids Bayard was able to escape the first quarter with the lead at 15-11 thanks to their strong passing game and rim attack. Paton Churdan had opportunities for threes down the stretch but couldn’t find the bottom of the net.

Quarter number three was another big scoring effort by the Crusaders, thanks to Tanner Oswald and Lance Clayburg who both took hard shots and got some to go. Coon Rapids Bayard went on the go 20-11 in the third quarter and extended their lead to 54-25.
