The Jefferson Police Department investigated an accident that occurred when a driver tried to go around a garbage truck. The incident was reported at approximately 8:52 a.m. Monday at Chestnut and Russell Streets. A 2020 Peterbilt Jefferson garbage truck was stopped facing northbound at the stop sign on Chestnut. As the driver, Kenny Schmidt of Jefferson, was turning west onto Russell Street, a 2008 Chevrolet Tahoe, driven by Cody Wenger of Des Moines, attempted to go around the truck. The vehicles collided, causing an estimate $3,000 in damages to the Tahoe and an estimated $1,500 to the Peterbilt. Wenger was cited for failure to provide proof of financial liability.
