Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Area Girls Basketball Teams Go 2-2; Kuemper and SCC Pick Up Wins

Girls Basketball Results for Monday, December 13th

Kuemper at Red Oak

Kuemper 56

Red Oak 28

Kuemper picked up their first win of the season as they got past Red Oak Monday night.

The Knights got to work right out of the gate as they dominated the first quarter 15-2. The Knights further extended their strong lead in the second quarter, but not without some pushback from Red Oak. The Knights still found ways to outscore the Tigers 18-11 and take the 33-13 lead at halftime. Frannie Glynn had a great first half as she scored 12 of her 14 points in that half alone and all together added nine rebounds, three blocks, and four steals to her statline. Catherine Mayhall and Akuet Malek both had strong scoring performances as they both added 12 points and seven rebounds to the Kuemper score. Malek also had a double-double on the night with 12 points and 11 blocks.

Kuemper did miss opportunities to score layups, but it didn’t cause them to get behind in the second half. The Knights took it to Red Oak in the third quarter, outperforming the Tigers again at 16-4 and leading 49-17 going into the fourth quarter. In the final eight minutes of the game, Kuemper Head Coach Tyler Tryon says they started to run out the clock early in the quarter in order to come away with the 56-28 victory. Coach Tryon added that the Knight’s defense was able to create a lot of turnovers that led to a bunch of run outs, that Akuet Malek held down the middle, and the girls ran the floor well and played hard all game long.

The Knights improve to 1-4 overall on the season. Kuemper will be on the road on Tuesday, December 14th when they take on Atlantic.

South Central Calhoun 63

SE Valley 34

South Central Calhoun faced a good test on the road and came away with a convincing 29-point win. The Titans were tough on the defensive end, finishing with 23 steals, only allowing one of the three Jaguars who entered the game scoring in double digits to score in double figures. The Titans were patient on offense, making the extra pass, finishing with 17 assists on 26 made baskets. South Central Calhoun got good contributions from 10 girls, with 7 girls scoring, 9 making a steal, 9 grabbing a rebound and 4 finishing with an assist.

The Titans scored first and went up 5-0 when Riley Batta found Emma Anderson for a 3. SE Valley stormed back to tie the game at 7, but South Central Calhoun was never challenged after that. Riley Batta scored to make it 14-7 before taking a pass from Kylee Schleisman, extending the lead to 16-7. The Titans went on a 9-0 run after the game was tied at 7. They scored 15 of 17 points, leading 20-9 after the 1st quarter. Riley Batta pressure at the front of the full court press and on the bottom of the 1-3-1 half-court defense led to fast break opportunities and helped the Titans dominate the glass. Batta had 14 points and 7 rebounds at half as the Titans led 31-19. The lead could have been more, but they didn’t score for around the final 4:00 of the half, allowing the Jaguars to get back into the game.

South Central Calhoun put the game away early in the 3rd quarter, quickly extending the lead to 39-21. Kylee Schleisman and Emma Anderson were outstanding at the top of the 2-3 zone and Sayer Steig and Addisyn Korleski did a lot of things that don’t show up in the box score. Schleisman made a steal and layup to make it 45-24 late in the 3rd. Emma Anderson threw a beautiful pass to Brenna McAlister who was cutting down the lane on a give and go for a layup early in the 4th. The Titans led 53-28 on the basket. Schleisman found Batta for another bucket and South Central Calhoun was up 56-30 late. Olivia Toms created a spark off the bench with her hustle in both halves.

Riley Batta was terrific on both ends going into the stands for loose balls, finishing with 25 points, 15 rebounds and 4 assists. Kylee Schleisman added 15 points, 8 steals. Sayer Steig had 9 points, 6 rebounds.

The win improves the Titans to 7-0 overall and 4-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They will host Emmetsburg on Friday.
