Iowa Farmers Union Is Fighting Back Against Ag Monopolies

The Iowa Farmers Union has created the Fairness for Farmers project, which details the damage being done to farmers, rural consumers and communities from the concentration of power in the ag business. The most recent example is the skyrocketing cost of fertilizer. In just one year, potash prices have jumped by 129 percent, urea is up 143 percent and anhydrous ammonia now costs producers 208 percent of what it did at this time last year. “Now more than ever we need drastic action to address monopolistic behavior that hurts farmers and consumers alike,” says Aaron Lehman, Iowa Farmers Union President. “Price increases in fertilizer are far above supply and demand issues.
