An Oto man died from injuries sustained when he crashed his vehicle while fleeing from law enforcement in Ida County Monday night. According to the Iowa State Patrol, 47-year-old David Downing was attempting to elude an Ida County Sheriff’s Office deputy in a 2000 Oldsmobile Alero. The chase began when Downing refused to yield for a routine traffic stop. At approximately 11:22 p.m., the pursuit entered the Crawford Creek Recreational Area where Downing failed to maintain control on one of the tight curves in the park. The Oldsmobile left the roadway, collided with a tree and rolled multiple times. Downing was pronounced dead at the scene. The Ida County Sheriff’s Office and Emergency Medical Services assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene.
