Two recent studies show a transition to E15 from E10 fuel by Iowans would positively benefit the state’s economy while also saving motorists money at the pump. An economic impact study released by Agriculture and Biofuels Consulting, LLP suggests consumers could realize up to $134 million in savings on fuel purchases, increase ethanol demand by nearly 61 million gallons, add over $95 million to Iowa gross domestic product (GDP) and generate an additional $73 million in yearly household incomes. A health and environmental benefits study from the University of Illinois—Chicago on the impacts of the transition is also promising. Their findings show an estimated annual carbon dioxide emission reduction by nearly 260,000 tons and potential health cost savings of $117.5 million. Iowa Renewable Fuels Executive Director, Monte Shaw, says, “These studies underline the positive impact if E15 were to replace E10 in the marketplace. Millions in savings at the pump. Greater demand for farm products. Massive reductions in tailpipe emissions and CO2 benefiting our health and environment. The legislature should act quickly to create a nation-leading biofuels policy. Then Iowa can export not just our biofuels, but our biofuels policy as well.” Both studies can be found included with this story on our website.
