Of the 17 speech teams from Kuemper Catholic (KHS) and Carroll High (CHS) Schools that competed at the district large-group contest over the weekend, 13 have advanced to the state competition. In order to qualify, teams must earn a “I” or excellent rating. The Iowa High School Speech Association (IHSSA) districts were held on Saturday, Jan. 22 in Denison. KHS’ ensemble, musical theatre and one-act play groups advanced, while CHS sent 10 groups: three improvisation; one musical theatre; one short film; three ensemble acting; one readers theater; and one one-act play. Kuemper’s speech teams are coached by Susan Glass and Deb Gute, and CHS is coached by Bill Polking. The IHSSA state contest will be held on Saturday, Feb. 5 at Spencer High School.
