Kaleb Booth was sensational in helping Carroll High pick up a huge conference win. Booth drained a three with 17 seconds left to put Carroll up 52-51, then drained a pair of free throws after the Tigers got a stop. Those 5 of his game-high 27 points helped the Tigers hold on for a 54-53 win in a game that went back and forth over the final few minutes. Booth took a pass from Ethan Lengeling early in the 4th to give the Tigers a 45-42 lead. That shot sparked an offense that was stagnant in the 3rd, getting outscored 17-9 to fall behind 41-40. Winterset kept the pressure up and went back up 47-45. Carroll responded with Evan Hammer picking up the inside on a nice inside pass to Tanner Gotto, who played well down the stretch. Hammer put Carroll back ahead 49-47 with a pair of free throws.

Winterset answered with four straight and led 51-49. Booth brought the ball up the floor and got himself free for a 22 foot three that hit nothing but net. The Tigers were up 52-51 but needed to make a stop. The defense came up big and Carroll took over but needed to get the ball inbounds. Booth was fouled on the play. He made both ends of a one-and-one. Winterset missed a three, but got the rebound and made a shot to cut it to 54-53 but Carroll didn’t need to inbound the ball and the clock expired.  The game had 11 lead changes and was tied 3 times. The Tigers’ biggest lead was 11 while the Huskies led by 6 early. Carroll battled back from down 10-4 early to lead 14-10 at the end of the 1st quarter. The Tigers kept the pressure on early in the 2nd quarter, building a  31-20 lead on a Kaleb Booth three. Winterset rallied with a 7-0 run and took the lead back at 36-35. The next four baskets changed the lead as the largest lead the rest of the game was 3, held by Carroll twice.  Kaleb Booth finished with 27 points on 7 made threes. Booth added 7 rebounds and 5 steals. Caden Kock left the game in the 3rd quarter with an injury, finishing with 9 points and 4 rebounds. Evan Hammer added 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Tanner Gotto had 8 points and 4 rebounds. Carroll went 7-8 from the free-throw line, Winterset finished 6-9.  Carroll improves to 8-5 overall and 6-3 in the Raccoon River Conference. That battle didn’t tucker down the Rockets at all as they dominated the second quarter 17-2 and took a massive 34-13 lead into halftime. Glidden Ralston Head Coach Tyler Shipley says the Rockets came out with way more energy and intensity than they expected them to, but he thought his bench players, including Emmett Snyder, Caden Wenck, and Bryson Ertz played particularly well in this game.  The Rockets didn’t stop at just scoring 17 in one quarter, they upped the intensity further to start the second half. Paton Churdan put up a game-high 22 points in the third quarter and defensively kept the Wildcats to eight points, extending their lead even further to 56-21 heading into the final minutes of regulation. The biggest factor leading to the Rockets’ big scores late in the game was their ability to rebound the basketball well and drive to the basket well against the Wildcat defense. Shaydon Thruman was on fire in this game, recording a 16 point, 10 rebound double-double while getting strong offensive support from Justin Stream and Joe Carey, who both recorded 11 points and five rebounds. The Rockets capped off their dominant game with another 20 point quarter in the fourth to get past the Wildcats by a final score of 67-24.  The Rockets grab their first win of the season and first conference win as the Wildcats drop to 2-12 overall on the season and 0-10 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Paton Churdan’s week continues with a road game against Collins-Maxwell on Thursday, January 27th. The Crusaders got their high-scoring affair started off with a solid first quarter. They put up 19 points against the Spartans to get out to a 19-11 lead going into the second quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard Head Coach Cory Meyer says for the first time this season, the Crusaders changed up things defensively, playing behind the post and not relying so much on the backside help and they wanted to stay more connected with their guards. While the start for the Crusaders went well, they fell behind a little bit in the second quarter. Exira-EHK switched up their defense to a zone look and capitalized on the turnovers from Coon Rapids Bayard to put up 12 points in the second quarter, but still trailed the Crusaders 30-23 going into halftime.  Just like the second quarter didn’t happen, Coon Rapids Bayard came back from halftime with the same explosive offense they had in the first quarter. Coach Meyer says they played behind the zone in the second half and got a lot of shots to go from inside the paint. That change of pace helped the Crusaders put up a game-high 22 points and extend their lead to 52-39. As mentioned, all five starters for Coon Rapids Bayard broke through for double-digit points, with Tanner Oswald leading the charge with 16 points. The Spartans mounted a small comeback in the fourth quarter as they were able to almost match the Crusaders point for point, only being outpaced by one point at 20-19. The strong first and third-quarter performances from the Crusaders helped them cruise to a 73-58 win over a tough Exira-EHK squad.  As a team, the Crusaders made 32 of 55 shots from the field, or 58%, but wasn’t so lucky from behind the arc, only making two of their 11 three-pointers. The Crusaders will improve to 10-6 overall on the season and 6-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference. Luke Wright and Tyler Schmitt attacked the basket well and gave the Raiders a 20-8 lead. Schmitt had eight points in that first quarter and Wright put six points on the board. East Sac Head Coach Todd Bontrager says in the second quarter, Manson NW Webster switched from man to man to a zone defense and applied some more pressure. Despite the change defensively, the Raiders still found ways to limit the Cougar scoring and get points in the paint to extend their lead to 35-16. Schmitt led the team up to that point with 15 first-half points. Caleb Eichorn for East Sac got their offense started in the third quarter with a pair of made three-pointers from the corner. The Raiders stayed consistent and continued to add to their lead going into the fourth quarter. Schmitt continued to attack the basket well, leading the team with 17 points and helping the Raiders extend their lead to 47-22. East Sac let up a bit in the final eight minutes of the contest, allowing Manson NW Webster to crack double-digit points, but their monstrous first three quarters was enough for the Raiders to come away with a win at 60-33.  As a team, the Raiders made 54% of their field goals, going 25 of 46, but were not so hot from behind the arc, making two of their 10 three-pointers, both those coming from Eichorn. They also shot well from the free-throw line, going eight of 14. The Raiders will improve to 8-8 overall on the season, 6-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference, and extend their current win streak to five games. South Central Calhoun didn’t slow down a bit going into the second quarter, in fact, they upped the intensity. They’d go on to score a game-high 22 points and leave the Wolverines in the dust as they took a 44-13 lead into halftime. The Titans were able to score high in this game thanks in part to the performance put on by Joshua Dietrich who put up 17 points, six rebounds, three assists, and two blocks.  The Titans in the second half did not come out and play with the same consistency as they did in the first half. The Wolverines were able to take it to the Titans with a 12-5 third quarter but still trailed by a mile at 49-35. The Titans gave their bench players some good playing time in the fourth quarter, notably Antonio Sanders who recorded six points, three rebounds, one steal, and two blocks, as well as Andrew Anderson who had four points, two rebounds, and two steals. The Titans were able to outscore the Wolverines in the fourth quarter by a score of 10-9 and walked away with the 57-34 victory.  As a team, the Titans made 41% of their field goals, sank eight three-pointers, and had a solid night from the free-throw line, going seven of 13. The Titans will improve to 13-2 overall on the season and 7-1 in the Twin Lakes Conference. Ar-We-Va Head Coach Matt Wilken says his team had an excellent first half highlighted by patience and great shooting. That statement was also true for the second quarter as the Rockets nearly scored 20 points all while extending their lead to 36-17. The Rockets were nearly stopped in their tracks as the Tigers made use of a bad start in the second half from Ar-We-Va. Bad decisions from the Rockets gave them only four points in the third quarter and allowed Woodbine to climb back within nine points of the Rockets lead at 40-31 going into the fourth quarter. Coach Wilkin says his guys got sped up by Woodbine which led to those bad decisions being made and low scoring in that quarter. With five minutes left in regulation, the Tigers cut the Rockets’ lead down to three points. The Rockets were pressured and handled it well as they got key stops down the stretch and some good free throws late as Ar-We-Va was able to hold off Woodbine by a final score of 53-42.  The Rockets got three guys in double-digit points, with Cooper Kock leading the team with 12 points and Will Ragaller and Conner Kirsch not too far behind with 10 points. Kock also led the team with 10 rebounds and recorded three assists and two steals. The Rockets will improve to 6-10 overall on the season and 4-8 in the Rolling Valley conference. OABCIG was struggling from the field at the start, putting up three-pointers that were off the mark and unable to drive inside the lane for layups. The Falcons started to sink buckets and get back in the game, but the Wolves were not far behind. Eli Dreyer drained a three-pointer that kept the Wolves in the game as they led 19-18 going into halftime. The Falcons were speedy in transition, but that cost them more than it did help them at first.  IKM-Manning and OABCIG traded the lead quite a few times in the third quarter, with the Wolves struggling to score many baskets. Amos Rasmussen tried to spark some energy into the Wolves with a field goal and a three-pointer to his name in the third quarter, but the only other points scored were from Kusel and Dalton Gross, who scored three of four free throws. The Falcons, off a three-pointer from East Harms, were able to grab the lead at 30-27 going into the fourth quarter. While the Wolves still played with intensity and fire, they were struggling to put up points in the fourth quarter. The Falcons were able to find their groove and extended their three-point lead to an eventual 14 point lead at 44-30. The Wolves only made six points in the final eight minutes as OABCIG was victorious by a final score of 46-33.  The Wolves will fall to 3-12 overall on the season.
