Hamlin Woman Charged With OWI After Crashing Car Through Carroll Convenience Store

The Carroll Police Department reports a Hamlin woman has been charged with operating while intoxicated after smashing her car into a convenience store over the weekend. Officers were dispatched to the 600 block of N. Walnut Street at approximately 8:22 p.m. Saturday night in response to the reported crash. Upon arrival, law enforcement located a 2010 Ford Escape with front-end damage and significant damage to the Casey’s General Store north facade. The driver, identified as 60-year-old Ida Irene Smith, told law enforcement she had mistaken the gas pedal for the brake and unintentionally accelerated into the building. Authorities say Smith admitted to drinking four or five beers prior to the crash. She was taken into custody and transported to the Carroll County jail where she registered a blood alcohol content of .207, more than 2.5 times the legal limit. Damage to the Smith vehicle was estimated at $800, and the Casey’s sustained approximately $5,000 in damage. No injuries were reported during the incident.
