Minard Petersen of Lake View

Minard Jurgen Petersen, age 94 of Lake View, IA passed away peacefully on Monday, January 31, 2022, at Black Hawk Life Care Center. Minard was born October 19, 1927, to parents Jurgen and Katherine (Kuhl) Petersen in Crawford County, Iowa.  He was baptized on November 13, 1927, at Zion Lutheran Church in Denison, IA. He grew up with his family in the Denison, Schleswig, and Wall Lake areas.  He confirmed his faith at Immanuel Church in Schleswig, IA. He graduated from Wall Lake in 1945.
Minard enlisted in the United States Navy and served on the USS Westmorland and USS Xanthus.  He achieved the rank of Seaman 1st Class.  He was discharged in 1946.
In 1950, Minard married the love of his life, Susan Meyer in Sac City, IA.  They were blessed with three children: Dianne, Minard, and Ronald.   Minard worked as a carpenter and retired in October of 1989.
Minard enjoyed fishing and watching his much loved wood duck houses.  During his retirement, he did jigsaw puzzles, Sudoku, and knitted stocking hats for the homeless.  Minard also enjoyed all sports and was an avid Cyclone fan.  He was active in the community by being a volunteer fireman, participating in the American Legion, and volunteering for the Orphan Grain Train. Minard was a member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church of Lake View and served as an elder, treasurer, and on various other boards.
He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife of 72 years Susan Petersen of Lake View, IA; children: Dianne (Dean) Graeve of Lytton, IA, Minard (MaryAnne) Petersen of Rochester, MN, Ronald Petersen of Westfield, MA; two grandchildren Joshua (Becky) Graeve of Ottumwa, IA, and Aaron (Kelli) Graeve of Jolley, IA; five great-grandchildren: Matthew, Luke, and Joseph Graeve, Jayci and Dillon Graeve; sister Bertha Sundrup; sisters-in-law Doris Petersen, and Lelia (Maris) Bergis; brothers-in-law Roger (Kay) Meyer and Matt (Amy) Meyer.
He was preceded in death by his parents Jurgen and Katherine Petersen; siblings Irene (Paul) Waters, Reynold (Joan) Petersen, Vernon (Patricia) Petersen, and Merlin Petersen; daughter-in-law Debra Petersen; sister-in-law Virginia (John) Scalph; brother-in-law Dean Sundrup; parents-in-law Ed and Pearl Meyer.
Funeral Services for Minard Petersen will be Friday, February 4, 2022 at 10:30 a.m.  at the Emmanuel Lutheran Church with Reverend Don Petersen III officiating.  Burial will take place at the Wall Lake Cemetery under the direction of Farber and Otteman Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m., at the church.
