Today (Friday) is World Cancer Day, and local officials are marking the occasion by recognizing those who have had cancer, are currently fighting cancer or will be diagnosed with it. On Wednesday, Carroll Mayor, Mark Beardmore, signed a proclamation at the St. Anthony Regional Cancer Center. He says, “We established World Cancer Day to talk about cancer in a positive and uplifting way because it, unfortunately, affects many people both directly and indirectly. Feb. 4 encourages members of Carroll and the surrounding communities to express gratitude and applaud the past, present and future cancer patients as well as the health care workers who serve them.” In 2021, the St. Anthony Cancer Center saw nearly 14,000 visits, including: 5,233 radiation treatments; 3,788 infusion therapies; 3,347 oncology visits; and 1,574 lab draws. The most common forms of cancer treated at the center are breast, prostate, lung, colon and skin cancers. St. Anthony President and CEO, Ed Smith, says, “[We] served 461 new patients from 17 different counties last year. We’ve had an overwhelming amount of community support with the opening of the cancer center; we thank Mayor Beardmore to have established an official day of awareness in Carroll with World Cancer Day.” A photo from the proclamation signing can be found included below.
