Decision On Carroll Rec Center Improvements And Expansion Will Likely Come During Monday’s City Council Meeting

The future of the proposed renovations and expansion project for the Carroll Recreation Center will likely be decided at Monday’s Carroll City Council meeting. Bids for the full project were $1.2 million over the originally estimated $6.7 million construction cost. The council was still split on the project following their most recent budget work session on Feb. 7. The options on the table are to leave the rec center unchanged, scale back the project and rebid or move forward using value engineering to cut costs. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, says the council will need to make a decision soon as the March 31 budget deadline approaches.

Three council members, Tom Bordenaro, Kyle Bauer and JJ Schreck, have objected to the high price tag for the addition an elevated walking track, gymnasium and other amenities. They previously expressed support for breaking the work up into multiple phases or cutting out some of the identified amenities. Pogge-Weaver says that is a possibility, but it will be up to the council to decide what those will be and how that will work.

City officials are also slated to approve a public hearing date on the Fiscal Year (FY) 2023 maximum property tax levy, which is tentatively scheduled for Feb. 28. Pogge-Weaver adds the council needs to approve an ordinance change to correct a minor error in the boundaries for the city and county voting precincts.

The Monday, Feb. 14 meeting begins at 5:15 p.m. at city hall. The proceedings will be livestreamed via the City of Carroll YouTube page as well as through CAAT6 local access cable. The full council packet for Monday’s meeting can be found included below.
