Russia has launched a full-scale military attack on Ukraine, and U.S. Senator, Chuck Grassley, says Russia has broken an agreement it had with the United States and Germany regarding the former Soviet country.
Grassley made his comments Wednesday in Audubon at the Audubon County Economic Development Corporation. He say the U.S. does not have obligation to assist Ukraine under the agreement made by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) because Ukraine is not a NATO member.
Senator, Joni Ernst, a former military officer, says we all need to say a prayer for the people of Ukraine right now.
Ernst adds she is getting a lot of questions on why Iowans should care about what is happening in Ukraine.
She notes any goods we have coming to the U.S. from Europe will be delayed, so Iowans can expect their energy and heating prices to rise. Ernst said they had an all-senators call Thursday afternoon.
She suggests the best course of action is to continue to provide more lethal aid to Ukraine and make sure they can the parts of the country that have not been invaded yet.
Ernst made her comments at Toyne Fire Apparatus in Breda Thursday while on her annual 99-county tour.
