One person was airlifted for injuries sustained in a two-vehicle crash north of Defiance in Shelby County Friday afternoon. According to the Iowa State Patrol, the accident occurred at approximately 4:40 p.m. on Highway 59 north of the intersection with F16. Authorities says a 2014 Dodge Avenger, driven by 19-year-old Evan Edwards of Council Bluffs, was traveling southbound when he crossed into the northbound lane and collided head-on with a northbound 2015 GMC Sierra, driven by 46-year-old Ryan Wheatley of Spirit Lake. Both vehicles came to rest in the west ditch following the crash. Edwards was transported by Lifenet Air Medical Services to the University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) in Omaha, Neb. for treatment of serious injuries. Wheatley and an eight-year-old passenger in his vehicle were taken to Myrtue Medical Center in Harlan by Shelby County Emergency Medical Services. The Shelby County Sheriff’s Office assisted the Iowa State Patrol at the scene. Authorities say an investigation into the crash is ongoing.
