IDPH Advises Iowans Of Expanded Abbott Formula Recall

Medical supply company, Abbott, is expanding its recall of a specific type of infant formula found to contain potentially harmful bacteria. This (Wednesday) morning, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) announced a single lot of Abbott’s Similac PM 60/40 powder formula produced in Sturgis, Mich. is being added to the existing voluntary callback. An ongoing investigation by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) into Cronobacter and Salmonella infections linked this product to other cases. Similac PM 60/40 is a specialized formula for infants with impaired renal function, so state health officials anticipate the number of Iowans affected by the recall to be relatively low. This latest recall is in addition to last month’s recall of Abbott’s Similac, Alimentum and EleCare products. Iowans can check to see if they have recalled formula by reviewing the codes on the bottom of their formula package, visiting the company’s website or contacting Abbott directly at 1-800-986-8540.
