State health officials say syphilis cases in Iowa have been rapidly climbing in recent years, and 2021’s provisional figures appear to show no end in sight for this trend. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), early data indicate the state’s diagnoses jumped by nearly 60 percent compared to the previous year. The complete analysis is still underway, but officials say approximately 64 percent of cases were identified in white, non-Hispanic individuals. However, they note syphilis rates were disproportionately high and increasing in minority populations. IDPH staff identified areas in northwest Iowa and Indigenous communities as areas of increased concern due to above-normal transmission rates in those populations.
