Born on July 1, 1934 in Breda, Iowa, Donita was the daughter of Norbert and Laverna (Ricke) Tiefenthaler. In 1951 she graduated from St. Bernard’s Catholic High School. On September 20, 1952, Donita was united in marriage to Melvin Nieland at St. Bernard’s Church. The couple made their home southwest of Breda where they were engaged in grain and livestock farming. In 1991 they retired to the Carroll community.
Donita and Melvin enjoyed 64 years of marriage. Her greatest enjoyment was being involved with her family especially her grand-and great-grandchildren. Her love of cooking and baking is credited with passing down the family sweet tooth legacy. Donita will be remembered for her deep devotion to the Catholic faith always having a rosary by her side. Donita was a member of the Saint John Paul II Catholic Church.
Left to celebrate Donita’s life are her children: Deb Simons (Bob) of Carroll, Rhonda Borer (Sam) of Omaha, Russ Nieland (Marsha) of Cedar Rapids, and Jodi Brincks (Rick) of Carroll; 11 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren. Also surviving are her siblings: Verle Tiefenthaler of Carroll, Marlene Heisterkamp (Ken) of Rapid City, SD, and Al Lammers (Leah) of Omaha; her in laws: Marita Bruning of Breda and Gladys Nieland of Harlan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and other extended relatives.
Donita is preceded in death by Melvin, her husband, Tim, their son, her parents, and her brother-in-laws and sister-in-laws: Norman Nieland, Leo Nieland, Dorothy Nieland, Judy Tiefenthaler, and Delmar Bruning.
