IHSAA And City Of Carroll Finalize Lease Agreement For State Baseball At Merchants Park Through 2024

According to the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA), overwhelmingly positive feedback on the 2021 state baseball tournament in Carroll from players, coaches, and fans contributed to the multi-year deal to keep the event at Merchants Park. At Monday’s meeting, the Carroll City Council approved a lease agreement with the association to host the 1A and 2A state tournaments through 2024. Under the agreement, the IHSAA will pay $5,600 each year to use the park, with an additional $1,000 to be used at the city’s discretion to offset some of the cost related to hosting. Association staff requested several improvements to the facility for the upcoming tournament. City Manager, Mike Pogge-Weaver, and Parks and Rec Director, Chad Tiemeyer, say those are already being looked at.

City staff is applying for federal grants from the U.S. Economic Development Administration to help cover some of the costs of these improvements. According to IHSSA Communications Director, Chris Cuellar, the response to last year’s tournament in Carroll combined with the city’s willingness to make the requested changes made it an easy decision to bring the games back to Merchants Park.

Last year’s state tournaments were split between Carroll and Iowa City with quarterfinal, semifinal, and championship games played on different days. Cuellar says they are adjusting the schedule so play is more consistent across classes.

The 2022 tournament is scheduled for July 18 through July 23, 2023’s games are between July 17 and July 22, and 2024 is slated for July 22 through July 27.
