Saturday Marks Carroll County Solid Waste’s Annual Hazardous Material Disposal Day

West Central Iowa Solid Waste’s household hazardous materials disposal day is scheduled for this weekend, so residents can safely rid themselves of items that do not belong with their regular trash. Landfill staff will be set up in the Des Moines Area Community College (DMACC) parking lot on Grant Road from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9. According to Director, Mary Wittry, the hazardous waste classification is much broader than most people think. It includes oil-based paints, full aerosol cans, non-alkaline batteries, fluorescent and LED lightbulbs, cleaning chemicals, and more. Wittry says these materials are often improperly discarded when people are cleaning out garages, attics, and other storage areas.

There are no fees associated with dropping items off during the disposal event, but they will not accept oil filters, ammunition, explosives, radioactive items, and other similar materials. Wittry says hazardous waste can create significant problems if buried at the landfill. They hope Saturday’s disposal day will make people think about what items are being thrown in the trash.

Again, the event runs from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, April 9 in the DMACC Carroll Campus parking lot. Wittry reminds residents hazardous wastes are also accepted at the Carroll County Landfill year-round during regular business hours. Visit www.westcentralsolidwaste.com for more information.
