2021 Domestic Violence Deaths In Iowa Mark 10-Year High

According to Iowa Attorney General’s Office, domestic violence fatalities in 2021 marked a 10-year high for the state. Data from the Crime Victim Assistance Division (CVAD) shows 20 Iowans died last year in domestic violence-related incidents with three additional deaths recorded in the first three months of 2022. CVAD Director, Sandi Tibbetts Murphy, says, “The loss of 20 lives to domestic violence is tragic. Adding seven additional deaths to the report in just the final four months of [the year] spotlights the devasting effects that domestic violence has for victims and families across Iowa.” Since 1995, 365 women, men, and bystanders have been killed due to domestic violence in the state. Iowans who find themselves in potentially dangerous situations due to domestic violence have several avenues for help. They can contact the 24/7 Iowa Domestic Violence Helpline at 800-770-1650, the National Domestic Violence Helpline at 800-799-SAFE, or the Teen Dating Violence Hotline at 866-331-9474.
