As Iowans prepare to celebrate Easter this weekend, the Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH) is encouraging families to take a few simple steps to ensure they do so safely. It is tradition for many Iowans to include live chicks in their festivities, but these tiny birds could potentially ruin the fun by spreading Salmonella. This bacteria is one of the most commonly-reported sources of foodborne illness in Iowa, and Salmonella is often spread through contact with animals, particularly birds. While live chicks can be handled safely, it is imperative children under five years old refrain from direct contact. State health officials recommend Iowans do not kiss or snuggle poultry, allow birds to roam freely within your home, or wash birds’ food and water bowls near dishes intended for human use.
