MRHC Recovery Center Director Highlights Alcohol Abuse Across Professions During Alcohol Awareness Month

April is National Alcohol Awareness Month, and the Recovery Center at Manning Regional Healthcare Center (MRHC) is making a point to show that nobody is immune to the effects of alcoholism. According to the Recovery Center’s Clinical Coordinator, Bradley Madsen, “Working in the addiction field, I’ve met hundreds of people who once believed alcoholism could never happen to them…until it did. Alcoholism doesn’t care what you do for a living or how much money you have in the bank. It doesn’t care what race you are or how educated you are. If you have recent patterns of abusing alcohol, you are at risk.” He points to data that show nearly one in five attorneys struggle with problem drinking, more than twice the national rate. A 2014 study found over 15 percent of physicians report alcohol abuse or dependence with similar rates reported in the construction, hospitality/food service, and management professions. Madsen says, “The sooner a person can get help, the better the long-term chance for recovery. Alcoholism is a disease, not a moral failing, choice, or weakness. If you need help or guidance, reach out to your physician or contact the Recovery Center at 712-655-2300.” For more information on excessive alcohol use and its effect on your health, follow the link included below.
