During their meeting last night (Monday), the Willey City Council passed an ordinance the bars abortions within city limits. With this vote, Willey became the first town in Iowa to become a pro-life sanctuary city and joins other parts of the country in outlawing abortion. Willey Mayor, Kristen Nehring, explains their reasoning for the ordinance. Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio Your browser doesn’t support HTML5 audio
The measure passed following a presentation from Mark Lee Dickson, director of the Right to Life organization of Texas. Nehring says they are also developing plans for ordinance enforcement.
Willey has a population of just over 100 residents and does not have any facilities capable of performing an abortion. Nehring says the ordinance is a reflection of the community’s values.
The council voted unanimously in favor of the ordinance change. While the meeting was going on last night, news was released that the United States Supreme Court is considering overturning the 1973 ruling of Roe vs. Wade.
