Iowa Secretary of State, Paul Pate, was in Westside yesterday (Thursday) to recognize students and staff at Ar-We-Va High School for registering at least 90 percent of their student body eligible to vote in the election later this year. Pate, the state’s top election official, presented the Carrie Chapman Catt Award to Ar-We-Va administrators for going above and beyond to prepare future voters.
Representatives from the Crawford County Auditor’s Office also attended the presentation. Pate credits them and Auditor’s Office staff throughout the state for Iowa’s history of secure and efficient elections.
Nearly 34-thousand high school students are registered to vote this year. He says it is critical these young Iowans are prepared to have a say in who represents them at every level of government. The award is named after famous Iowan, Carrie Chapman Catt, who was instrumental in securing passage of the 19th Amendment that granted women access to the ballot box 100 years ago. Only 31 of the more than 350 Iowa high schools received the award this year.
