County-by-county April unemployment numbers were released earlier this week, and the report from Iowa Workforce Development (IWD) shows six of the seven counties in the listening area were a percentage point or more below the statewide rate. Carroll led the region with the lowest unemployment at 1.5 percent, a 50-percent decline from April 2021 figures. Greene County dropped from 3.7 percent last year to 1.7 percent. Audubon and Sac were close behind at 1.8 percent, dropping 1.4 points and 1.6 points respectively. Calhoun and Guthrie Counties both came in with rates over two percent, 2.0 and 2.1, but both recorded significant reductions in unemployment from a year ago. Crawford County had the highest rate in the region at 3.2 percent, but that was still a notable improvement of 1.9 points from last April. Iowa’s April 2022 unemployment rate fell to 3.0 percent from 3.3 percent in March. The national rate was recorded at 3.6 percent.
