Five Carroll Middle School (CMS) students are set to compete next week during the National History Day contest. The week-long event in Washington, D.C. begins June 12 and runs through June 18. The Tiger team consists of Bri Kiger, Yllka Islami, Jaia Strong, Leah McFarland, and Brooke Stangl. They will be submitting their entry virtually into the junior-level group performance category. The theme for the 2022 contest was “Debate & Diplomacy in History: Successes, Failures, Consequences.” The girls highlighted the plight of female workers during the 1910s and 20s who developed severe radiation poisoning while painting watch dials with radium and their fight to secure compensation from their employers for injuries sustained while working. The girls’ 10-minute video presentation is available on YouTube, and a link to watch it is included with this story on our website. Over 30,000 students from around the nation started in the National History Day contest, and about 3,000 were selected for consideration in the final stage.
